Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy, MAHER, observed the International Day of Older Persons 2025 on 3rd October 2025, aligning with this year’s global theme — “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights.” The program was organized to honor and highlight the invaluable contributions of older persons while emphasizing their aspirations, well-being, and rights.
The event commenced with an inaugural address that underscored the significance of the day and the importance of recognizing older persons as active contributors to both local and global development. Students from the Department of Occupational Therapy conducted talks and interactive sessions focusing on the challenges faced by older adults and the necessity of promoting healthy aging, dignity, and independence.
A special talk was delivered by Mrs. Leala Joyce on “The Role of Society in Supporting the Well-Being and Rights of Older Persons.” She emphasized the role of youth in fostering inclusivity and creating an environment that empowers the elderly to stay active and valued in the community.
In a meaningful gesture, students took a pledge to respect, support, and uphold the rights of older persons, reaffirming their commitment to building an age-friendly and compassionate society.
The program successfully fostered awareness among students about the aspirations and rights of older persons, reinforcing values of empathy, respect, and social responsibility — truly reflecting the spirit of the International Day of Older Persons.
