United for Elimination: MMCHRI Observes World Leprosy Day 2026

The Department of Dermatology (DVL), Meenakshi Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, observed World Leprosy Day 2026 on 30th January 2026 with the objective of creating awareness about leprosy, reducing stigma, and promoting early diagnosis and timely treatment.

The programme commenced with participant registration, followed by a warm welcome address by Dr. R. Rajesh, Professor, DVL, who underscored the importance of sustained awareness initiatives and early intervention in the effective control of leprosy. An insightful Leprosy Awareness Talk was delivered by Dr. S. Kumaravel, Professor and Head, DVL, who elaborated on the causes, clinical features, modes of transmission, prevention strategies, and current approaches to management, emphasizing that leprosy is a curable disease with early treatment.

The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof. Dr. K. V. Rajasekhar, Dean, who highlighted the pivotal role of healthcare institutions, medical professionals, and community engagement in achieving the goal of leprosy elimination. He stressed the need for continued education, compassion, and coordinated efforts to combat myths and social stigma associated with the disease.

As part of the outreach component, pamphlets were distributed and health education activities were conducted under the guidance of Dr. K. Boopathi, Medical Superintendent, reinforcing key messages on early reporting, treatment adherence, and community awareness. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. R. Nirmala, Assistant Professor, DVL, acknowledging the contributions of all speakers, organizers, and participants.

Overall, the observance effectively reinforced awareness, encouraged proactive health-seeking behavior, and strengthened collective responsibility towards the elimination of leprosy and the promotion of inclusive healthcare.
