Meenakshi College of Nursing Observes World No Tobacco Day 2026

Meenakshi College of Nursing (MCON) observed World No Tobacco Day on 1st June 2026 at 2.00 p.m. in the MCON Conference Hall. The programme was organized to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to promote a tobacco-free lifestyle among students. The theme for this year was “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” emphasizing the need for stronger tobacco control strategies to combat addiction among the younger generation, particularly children and adolescents.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Ms. Gloria Bakkiyavathy, B.Sc. Nursing IV Year student. The sensitization talk on “Say No to Tobacco” was delivered by Dr. Fabiola M. Dhanaraj, Principal, MCON. In her address, she highlighted the health hazards associated with tobacco use and stressed the importance of education, policy implementation, and advocacy in reducing the attractiveness of tobacco products and promoting a healthier, tobacco-free society.

As part of the programme, student presentations on the ill effects of smoking were delivered by Mr. Hariharan and Ms. Gloria Bakkiyavathy, final-year B.Sc. Nursing students. Their presentations effectively highlighted the physical, psychological, and social consequences of tobacco consumption and reinforced the importance of preventive measures and healthy lifestyle choices.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. J. Anitha, Professor, MCON. A total of 144 B.Sc. Nursing students actively participated in the programme, making it an informative and impactful awareness initiative. The event concluded with the National Anthem at 4.00 p.m.
