AMCON Observes “Ageing with Dignity” Initiative with Campus Program and Community Outreach

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, under the guidance of the University Grants Commission (UGC), spearheaded the nationwide observance of the “Ageing with Dignity” initiative, which was held at Arulmigu Meenakshi College of Nursing (AMCON) on 16th September 2025 at the Multipurpose Hall.

The program began with the rendition of Tamizh Thai Vazhthu, followed by a warm welcome address by Ms. Sujatha, II Year B.Sc. (N). Dr. S. Victor Devasirvadam, Principal of AMCON, unfolded the theme of the day, emphasizing the importance of respectful care and responsibility towards the elderly.

The keynote address was delivered by Mrs. S. Uma, Associate Professor, who elaborated on the theme “Ageing with Dignity”, highlighting the rights of senior citizens and the role of healthcare professionals in ensuring their holistic well-being. A pledge was then taken by faculty, students, and non-teaching staff to uphold the values of dignity, empathy, and support for the elderly.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Dorthy Braina, II Year B.Sc. (N), followed by the National Anthem.

As part of the initiative, an outreach programme was also conducted the same day at Pallavarmedu. Mrs. Asha Rani, Assistant Professor, AMCON, delivered an insightful session on comprehensive elderly care, combating ageism, and the availability of helplines for senior citizens.

The observance and outreach programme together benefited around 200 students, inspiring them to contribute actively towards creating a society that values and respects its elderly population.
