AMCON Observes National Breastfeeding Week with Community Outreach and Student Engagement

The National Service Scheme (NSS) and Student Nurses Association (SNA) of Arulmigu Meenakshi College of Nursing (AMCON) observed National Breastfeeding Week from 1st to 7th August 2025 with the theme “Invest in Breastfeeding, Invest in the Future.”

The celebration began on 1st August with an inaugural event where Principal Dr. Victor Devasirvadam highlighted the importance of breastfeeding. This was followed by a rangoli competition evaluated by Mrs. Uma Devi, Nursing Superintendent, MMCH&RI. On 2nd August, a poster presentation competition was organized and assessed by Mrs. Premalatha, Nutritionist. The activities continued on 4th August with essay writing and slogan competitions, judged by Dr. Neeraja, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry.

A community outreach program held on 5th August at Namandi Village proved to be particularly impactful, featuring awareness talks by faculty members, demonstrations of breastfeeding techniques, and a role play by students, which benefitted nearly 100 members of the public. On 6th August, at Meenakshi Medical College & Research Institute, students conducted a panel discussion on “Liquid Gold” along with a debate comparing breastfeeding and bottle feeding, engaging around 50 mothers.

The week-long observance concluded with a grand valedictory function on 7th August at the AMCON Multipurpose Hall, presided over by Chief Guest Prof. Mrs. Jones Marina, Bon Secours College of Nursing. The program featured cultural performances, panel discussions, skits, and the distribution of prizes for poster, rangoli, slogan, and essay competitions. Each day ended with the rendition of the National Anthem, making the event both informative and impactful.

Overall, the observance of National Breastfeeding Week at AMCON successfully combined academic activities, cultural expression, and community service, raising awareness on the importance of breastfeeding among students, healthcare professionals, and the public.
