FHS, MAHER Celebrates National Statistics Day 2025 with Inspiring Lecture on Data Science and AI

The Department of Mathematics and the Mathematics Club, Faculty of Humanities and Science (FHS), MAHER, marked National Statistics Day 2025 with a vibrant and intellectually enriching event on 4th June 2025 at the MAHER Auditorium.

The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. P. Sagayaraj, Dean, FHS. The highlight of the event was a keynote lecture by the distinguished Dr. C. Muthu, Professor and Head, Department of Data Science, Loyola College (Autonomous), Chennai. The Chief Guest was felicitated by Dr. V. Shanthi, Principal (Shift I), and Dr. N. Prabhavathidevi, Principal (Shift II), while Mrs. V. Sivasankari, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, introduced the speaker.

Dr. Muthu delivered an engaging and forward-looking lecture titled “Future Scope of Data Science and AI: Upskilling Strategies Towards Careers.” He explored how Data Science is revolutionizing industries with real-world applications, particularly highlighting forecasting models in transport systems, data preparation, outlier treatment using winsorization, and model evaluation techniques.

Delving into the transformative power of Generative AI, Dr. Muthu captivated the audience with demonstrations of text-to-image generation using diffusion models. He emphasized tools such as the Hugging Face Diffusers Library and Google Colab, empowering students to explore AI-driven creativity.

The lecture also shed light on practical use cases including object detection and medical expense prediction using regression models, underscoring the pervasive role of Data Science across domains. Dr. Muthu passionately encouraged students to continuously upskill in Python, R, AI frameworks, cloud platforms, and collaborative technologies like GitHub.

With an emphasis on developing both technical and analytical acumen, he inspired the audience to harness Data Science for innovation and societal impact. His address was both motivational and deeply informative, urging students to become change-makers in the data-driven world.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. R. Shanthi, Head of the Department of Mathematics and event organizer, who expressed gratitude to the speaker, dignitaries, faculty, and student participants for making the celebration a grand success.
