Field Visit to Prema Vasam – Experiential Learning Initiative by Meenakshi College of Nursing

The Department of Mental Health Nursing, Meenakshi College of Nursing, organized a community outreach field visit to Prema Vasam on 06 March 2026 as part of an experiential learning initiative. A total of 45 students, accompanied by Dr. Thephilah Cathrine R., Associate Professor, MCON, and Ms. Ida Sherlee J., Assistant Professor, MCON, participated in the visit to the centre located in Gerugambakkam.

The visit commenced with an introductory session by Mr. Selwyn Roy, Founder of Prema Vasam, who provided an overview of the institution’s mission and its dedicated efforts towards the care and rehabilitation of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This was followed by an informative session by Ms. Mumtaj, Clinical Psychologist, who elaborated on the therapeutic, educational, and rehabilitation services offered at the centre.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to observe therapy sessions and interact with both the staff and children, gaining practical insights into multidisciplinary care and inclusive rehabilitation practices. The experience enabled students to better understand the challenges faced by individuals with developmental disabilities and the importance of compassionate, holistic care.

The field visit proved to be highly enriching, enhancing students’ clinical exposure, social awareness, and sense of responsibility towards supporting individuals with special needs in the community.
