International Mother Language Day Pledge Taking Ceremony at Arulmigu Meenakshi College of Nursing

The NSS Unit of Arulmigu Meenakshi College of Nursing (AMCON) solemnly observed International Mother Language Day on 21.02.2026 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, AMCON, under the global theme of **UNESCO> “Multilingual Education.” The programme aimed to emphasize the importance of preserving the native language, particularly Tamil, as a core element of identity, culture, and heritage, while also highlighting the urgent need to protect endangered languages across the world.

The celebration commenced with Tamizhthai Vazhthu, invoking a sense of cultural pride and unity. Ms. Johnsi, NSS Coordinator of AMCON, warmly welcomed the gathering and addressed the significance of safeguarding linguistic diversity. The highlight of the programme was the mass pledge-taking ceremony, in which 100 students and 10 faculty mentors collectively vowed to protect and promote the Tamil language while respecting the rich linguistic tapestry of the global community.

As part of the celebration, debate and essay writing competitions were conducted on the theme of preserving linguistic roots. Students enthusiastically participated, articulating thoughtful perspectives on cultural continuity, language preservation, and intergenerational responsibility. The competitions added intellectual depth to the celebration and encouraged critical reflection on the role of language in shaping society.

The event concluded on a reflective note, reinforcing that Tamil is not merely a medium of communication but the very soul of identity, culture, and an ancient civilization. The observance served as a reminder that preserving one’s mother tongue is both a privilege and a responsibility, and that safeguarding linguistic heritage must continue beyond commemorative events.

The Mother Language Day pledge-taking ceremony marked the beginning of a sustained commitment to cherish, protect, and pass on our linguistic legacy to future generations.
