The Meenakshi College of Nursing, MAHER, observed World Environment Day on 16th June 2025 with the global theme “Beat the Plastic.” Organized by the National Service Scheme (NSS) in collaboration with the Mangadu Municipality, the event aimed to raise awareness on responsible waste management, segregation, composting, and plastic reduction. The programme was held from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and saw the enthusiastic participation of 33 students, one faculty member, and the Principal.
The event commenced with an educational visit to the Micro Composting Centre (MCC) in Mangadu. A brief introduction was followed by an engaging and informative presentation by Mr. Sai, who explained the various types of waste, methods of segregation, and the long-term importance of minimizing plastic usage. A live demonstration of composting machinery and decomposition techniques added practical value to the learning experience.
Following this, the group visited the Mangadu Municipality Office, where Ms. Augusta distributed informative pamphlets on effective waste disposal practices to the participants. Mr. Barath, B.Sc. (Nursing) II Year student, and a faculty member shared their reflections and feedback on the session, emphasizing its relevance to public health and sustainable living.
In the final part of the day’s proceedings, Dr. Fabiola M. Dhanaraj, Principal, Meenakshi College of Nursing, met with the Commissioner of Mangadu Municipality to express gratitude for the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful and impactful initiative.
The event reinforced the importance of environmental stewardship and empowered nursing students to advocate for sustainable practices in their communities.
