MCON Screens ‘Vannathupoochi’ to Raise Mental Health Awareness

As part of an initiative launched by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Meenakshi College of Nursing, MAHER, organized a special screening of the thought-provoking film ‘Vannathupoochi’ on 13th June 2025. The event witnessed the participation of 143 students and 08 faculty members, and was coordinated by the Student Nurses Association (SNA).

The screening aimed to promote awareness and encourage open dialogue about parenting, student challenges, and mental health, particularly in the context of contemporary academic and societal pressures. The film served as a powerful medium to highlight the emotional struggles and psychological impact that unrealistic expectations and strained parent-child relationships can have on young individuals.

Dr. Thephilah Cathrine R, Associate Professor and SNA Advisor, addressed the audience and emphasized that the DME’s initiative provides a meaningful opportunity for college students to reflect on the role of parental influence and social expectations in shaping mental well-being.

The screening effectively brought attention to the mental health issues faced by children and adolescents, many of which stem from pressures within their home and academic environments. By showcasing relatable and sensitive narratives, the programme aimed to reduce the stigma associated with mental health, and to encourage students to seek support when needed.

The event was a step forward in fostering a culture of empathy, awareness, and mental health advocacy among future healthcare professionals.
