Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy, MAHER, in collaboration with the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, organized an Awareness Program on Wheelchair Training and Basic Skills on 30th March 2026 from 10:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. at the Auditorium, MAHER.
The programme commenced with the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by the lighting of the kuthuvilakku, symbolizing the dissemination of knowledge. The welcome address was delivered by the Principal, Prof. Deepa Sundareswaran, who highlighted the importance of such initiatives in promoting inclusive rehabilitation practices.
The session aimed to create awareness and provide essential knowledge and practical skills related to wheelchair handling, mobility, and safety. It emphasized the role of proper wheelchair usage in enhancing independence and improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
The resource persons for the programme were Shri Gokul S, Rehabilitation Officer (Occupational Therapy), NIEPMD, and Shri Kalaiselvan, Tutor, Department of Therapeutics, NIEPMD. They were introduced by Mr. Bennett Branson Benjamin, Assistant Professor, Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy, who outlined their expertise and contributions to the field of rehabilitation.
The sessions covered key areas such as basic wheelchair skills, posture management, transfer techniques, and safety precautions. The programme was highly interactive, with demonstrations and hands-on practice enabling participants to gain practical understanding of wheelchair mobility and rehabilitation techniques.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Miraculine Devadarshini P, Assistant Professor, who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, organizers, and participants.
This field engagement offered students valuable hands-on exposure to assistive technology and rehabilitation techniques. It significantly enhanced their practical skills, clinical understanding, and awareness of inclusive care practices.
