Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy, MAHER Observes World Suicide Prevention Day with Awareness Programme

Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy, MAHER, organized an Awareness Programme on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September 2025 at the MAHER Auditorium.

The event commenced with the traditional Tamizh Thaai Vazhthu, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the Kuthuvilakku by the Chief Guest, Ms. Preenu Ashok, along with Prof. Deepa Sundareswaran and other dignitaries. This symbolic gesture represented the dispelling of darkness and the spreading of knowledge.

Prof. Deepa Sundareswaran extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, faculty, students, and guests. Dr. Lily Christopher, Dean of Student Affairs, addressed the gathering with an inspiring message that set a positive tone for the programme. Ms. Leala Joyce Rani R., Assistant Professor, introduced the Chief Guest, highlighting her impactful journey in mental health and her significant contributions to the field.

The Chief Guest, Ms. Preenu Ashok, delivered a thought-provoking talk on building a positive attitude, showing gratitude to parents, embracing self-pride, and nurturing resilience and confidence. A student pledge against suicide and the creation of a symbolic chain of positivity further reinforced the theme of the day. The Dial a Help segment provided participants with essential information on national, state, and NGO helpline numbers.

The cultural segment featured engaging student performances, including a social-awareness drama, impactful speeches, and reels promoting suicide prevention and self-worth. The programme also recognized talent through competitions. In the poster presentation category, the first prize was awarded to Ms. Pushpavathi and Ms. Lakshmi of BOT I Year, the second prize to Ms. Jessy Illakiya of BOT II Year, and the third prize to Ms. Mariam of BOT III Year and Ms. Yogitha of MOT II Year. In the reels competition, the first prize was secured by Mr. Rohan and team from BOT II Year, while the second prize went to Ms. Rose Mathew and team from BOT I Year.

Dr. Mythili, Student Counsellor, MAHER, addressed the gathering on the importance of mental well-being and the need to seek timely help. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Aarthi A., Assistant Professor, followed by the National Anthem.

The programme was a resounding success, leaving participants enriched, motivated, and inspired to foster a culture of positivity and mental well-being.
