The Department of Microbiology in collaboration with the Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC) of Meenakshi Medical College Hospital & Research Institute successfully observed World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2025 from 18 to 24 November 2025, under the global theme “Act Now, Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” The week-long observance was dedicated to promoting responsible antimicrobial use and strengthening awareness about antimicrobial resistance among students, healthcare professionals, and the public.
The activities commenced on 18 November with a vibrant Rangoli competition involving Medical Laboratory Technology students and nursing staff, creatively conveying messages on antimicrobial awareness. This was followed on 19 November by a poster competition for Phase II MBBS students, encouraging scientific thinking and visual communication on the challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance.
A key highlight of the observance was the antimicrobial forms audit conducted across all hospital wards on 20 and 21 November, reinforcing best practices in antimicrobial stewardship and rational prescription among healthcare providers. Extending awareness beyond the campus, a public rally was organized on 21 November from the hospital casualty entrance, with enthusiastic participation from faculty members, students, and members of the public, emphasizing collective responsibility in combating antimicrobial resistance.
The educational focus continued with an informative seminar for Phase II MBBS students on 22 November, which addressed the causes, consequences, and preventive strategies related to antimicrobial resistance. The week-long program concluded with a valedictory function held on 24 November, marking the successful culmination of the awareness initiatives.
Overall, the observance effectively combined academic, clinical, and community-oriented activities, reinforcing the importance of timely action, informed practices, and sustained commitment to safeguard the efficacy of antimicrobials for future generations.
