National Librarian’s Day Observed at MCON

The observance of National Librarian’s Day at Meenakshi College of Nursing (MCON) began with a melodious invocation song presented by the MCON Choir, setting a solemn and respectful tone for the event. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Fabiola M. Dhanaraj, Principal, MCON, who highlighted the importance of the occasion and underscored the vital role libraries play as knowledge hubs in today’s academic and societal landscape. She also reflected on the enduring legacy of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan (1892–1972), revered as the Father of Library Science in India, who pioneered the development of modern library systems across the country.

Following the keynote, Ms. Manju, a B.Sc. (Nursing) I Year student, spoke on the value of strong reading skills, linking reading as a lifelong asset to the vision of Dr. Ranganathan. This was followed by an address by Dr. Kavitha M., Professor, who explored Dr. Ranganathan’s monumental contributions, including the formulation of the Five Laws of Library Science—which laid the philosophical foundation for modern library services—and the invention of the Colon Classification System, a scientific method for organizing library materials still in use today.

As a mark of respect, faculty and students offered a floral tribute to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, honouring his immense contributions to the nation’s library system. The event, enriched with insightful speeches and tributes, served as a fitting homage to his remarkable legacy. The program concluded with the National Anthem.
