The Faculty of Humanities and Science (FHS), MAHER, observed World Breastfeeding Week on August 5, 2025, at Computer Lab II from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This year’s theme, “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems”, celebrates breastfeeding mothers in all their diversity, throughout their unique journeys, and highlights the collective role of families, communities, societies, and health professionals in supporting them.
The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized a special lecture on “Role of Nutrition in Supporting Lactation – Dispelling Myths” for faculty members and students. The session, attended by nearly 55 participants, was delivered by Ms. N. Haripriya, MSc, RD, CDE, Registered Dietitian and Clinical Nutritionist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, T. Nagar. She addressed key aspects of maternal nutrition and its link to breastfeeding success, stressing the importance of early initiation within the first hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continued breastfeeding with complementary foods for at least two years. Her talk emphasized that such practices can help reduce infant mortality, prevent childhood illnesses, and ensure long-term health for both mothers and children.
Dr. P. Sagayaraj, Dean, addressed the gathering, highlighting breastfeeding’s vital role in providing essential nutrients, strengthening the baby’s immune system, and lowering the risk of infections and diseases. Dr. N. Prabhavathy Devi, Principal (Shift II), Professor and Head, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, welcomed the participants and elaborated on the nutritional significance of breast milk. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. T. Thilagavathi, Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics.
