People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention

On June 26, 2024, Faculty of Humanities and Science, MAHER observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with the theme “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.” Dr. Shanthi, Principal of FHS, welcomed attendees, emphasizing the day’s significance. Dr. Pushpa Nagini Sripada, Dean of FHS, highlighted the role of education and awareness in combating drug abuse. The Dean of Students led a pledge against drug abuse, reinforcing community commitment to a drug-free environment.

Chief Guest Mr. Mohitheen Batcha, Director of Counselling & Training Services at ATHMA MIND CENTRE, Chennai, addressed the gathering on prioritizing individuals over stereotypes and enhancing prevention through education. Dr. Deepa Sundareswaran, Principal of the Faculty of Occupational Therapy, discussed stress management strategies for those supporting loved ones with addiction.

Students from the English Literacy Club, including Logeshwari S., Pragadheeshwari G.V., Aiswarya, and Hemalatha, shared speeches and poems on the importance of peer support and awareness in preventing drug abuse, reflecting their hope for a future free from addiction. Ms Roopa, Secretary of English Literary club moderated the session.
