NSS Unit of Meenakshi College of Nursing Conducts Awareness Programme on Leprosy

The NSS Unit of Meenakshi College of Nursing organized an awareness programme on Leprosy on 30th July 2025 at the Conference Hall, MCON, with the aim of educating nursing students on the importance of early detection, prevention, and elimination of leprosy. The event was coordinated by Mrs. R. Jebin Sherly, Associate Professor, MCON.

The programme began with Tamil Thai Vaazhthu, setting a respectful and traditional tone for the event, followed by a warm welcome address by Ms. Dharshini, a second-year B.Sc. Nursing student. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Fabiola M. Dhanaraj, Principal, MCON, who emphasized the significance of early diagnosis and free treatment in preventing disabilities and deformities associated with leprosy.

Mr. Krishnamurthy, Health Educator, Deputy Director of Health Services, Poonamallee, delivered a compelling awareness talk highlighting the signs, symptoms, treatment options, and preventive strategies for leprosy. He also discussed the Leprosy Case Detection Campaign, stressing the importance of timely case identification, public awareness, and a strong surveillance system to eliminate the disease. His message echoed a national commitment to achieving zero leprosy cases by 2027.

The programme saw enthusiastic participation from nearly 100 students and 8 faculty members, who engaged attentively with the speaker and appreciated the initiative. The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Yogalakshmi, B.Sc. Nursing II Year, acknowledging the collective effort in spreading awareness and supporting the cause.

With continued support from health authorities and active community involvement, such initiatives pave the way for a leprosy-free future.
