Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy Joins “Samvegh” Inclusive 5K Marathon Promoting Accessibility and Unity

Students and faculty from Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy (MCOT) actively participated in “Samvegh”, an inclusive 5K marathon organized on 15th March 2026 by the National Centre for Assistive & Health Technology (NCAHT–IIT Madras) in collaboration with R2D2 of NCAHT, the National Institute of Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), MAHER, and other universities.

A total of 21 students and one faculty member from MCOT took part in the event, which aimed to promote fitness, inclusivity, and community engagement. The marathon brought together participants from diverse backgrounds, including individuals using wheelchairs and persons with disabilities, creating a platform that celebrated equal participation in sports.

The event was thoughtfully structured with multiple participation categories to ensure accessibility for all. Volunteers played a key role in facilitating the smooth conduct of the marathon by assisting with registration, guiding participants along the route, and managing hydration and safety arrangements. A pre-run warm-up session and safety briefing further ensured that all participants were well-prepared.

As part of the “Voting Made Accessible” initiative, the marathon went beyond a fitness event to advocate for inclusion, empathy, and social responsibility. The enthusiastic participation and collaborative spirit highlighted the importance of equal opportunities in community activities and reinforced the idea that sports can unite individuals irrespective of their abilities or backgrounds.

This field engagement offered students valuable hands-on exposure to inclusive practices and the opportunity to interact with diverse populations in a community setting. It significantly enhanced their practical understanding, communication skills, and awareness of accessibility and social inclusion.
