The Department of Paediatrics, Meenakshi Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (MMCHRI) inaugurated the World Breastfeeding Week 2026 celebrations on 1st August 2026, marking the beginning of a week-long awareness campaign dedicated to promoting the importance of breastfeeding for maternal and child health.
The inaugural programme was graced by Dr. K. Boopathi, Dean, MMCHRI; Dr. V. Eswari, Vice Principal (Academics); Dr. C. Mahendran, Resident Medical Officer (RMO); and Dr. K. Srinivasagalu, Medical Director. The event commenced with the ceremonial lamp lighting followed by the Tamil Thai Vazhthu. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Ubaidur Rahman, Associate Professor, Department of Paediatrics, and the inaugural address was delivered by Dr. K. Boopathi, who highlighted the significance of breastfeeding in ensuring the healthy growth and development of infants.
The programme brought together expectant mothers and lactating mothers, who benefited from informative sessions delivered by Dr. C. Mahendran, RMO, Dr. Jayanthi, Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Dr. Hariharan, In-charge Head, Department of Paediatrics. The speakers emphasized the numerous health benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for both mothers and newborns, while encouraging families to support optimal infant feeding practices.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. Roshan M. S. R., Assistant Professor, Department of Paediatrics. As a gesture of encouragement, the participating mothers were presented with healthy baby kits and nutritious snacks.
The inaugural event set a meaningful tone for the week-long celebration, reinforcing the importance of breastfeeding awareness and encouraging collective efforts to ensure every child receives the best possible start to life through exclusive breastfeeding.
