Meenakshi College of Nursing Conducts Drug Abuse Awareness Programme with Jeeva Rakshai Mental Health Wellness

Meenakshi College of Nursing (MCON), MAHER, in collaboration with Jeeva Rakshai Mental Health Wellness, organized a Drug Abuse Awareness Programme on 16th August 2026 to sensitise students to the growing concerns associated with substance abuse and the importance of prevention and early intervention.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Sudharsanan, B.Sc. Nursing I Year. This was followed by the keynote address delivered by Dr. Fabiola M. Dhanaraj, Principal, MCON. Dr. Thephilah Cathrine R., Associate Professor, MCON, introduced the Chief Guest, Dr. A. C. N. Aruna, Psychologist and Managing Director, Jeeva Rakshai Mental Health Wellness Centre, who delivered an informative awareness session on drug abuse.

Dr. Aruna elaborated on commonly abused substances, their causes and risk factors, warning signs of substance use, and the physical and mental health consequences of addiction. She also highlighted the wider impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and society. Students were sensitised to the importance of early intervention, counselling, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support for individuals affected by substance use.

Special emphasis was placed on the role of nurses in drug abuse prevention, health education, early identification, referral, and rehabilitation. An interactive session provided students with an opportunity to clarify their doubts and engage in meaningful discussions on substance abuse, addiction, and preventive strategies.

The Chief Guest was felicitated by Dr. Fabiola M. Dhanaraj, Principal, MCON, and Dr. Jaya Bharathi B., Vice Principal, MCON. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. Bharath, B.Sc. Nursing III Year.

The programme strengthened students’ awareness of substance abuse and reinforced the importance of prevention, professional intervention, and compassionate support in promoting a healthier and drug-free society.
