Meenakshi Medical College Hospital & Research Institute (MMCHRI), Kanchipuram, celebrated the 80th Independence Day on 15th August 2026 with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour. The celebrations commenced at 9.00 a.m. at the Athletic Track of MMCHRI, with the blessings and guidance of Mrs. Jayanthi Radhakrishnan, Chancellor, MAHER; Mr. Akash Prabhakar, Pro-Chancellor, MAHER; and the Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor of MAHER.
Cdr. S. Karthikeyan, Surgeon Commander, INS Rajali, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and hoisted the National Flag, followed by the National Anthem and Vande Mataram. He also inspected the parade and took the salute. In his Independence Day address, he highlighted the vital role of the Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation and responding to emergencies. He urged future doctors to uphold the values of discipline, dedication, and service to humanity.
Prof. Dr. V. Surekha Varalakshmi, Registrar, MAHER, was the Guest of Honour. In her special address, she emphasized the importance of ethics, social responsibility, and nation-building in medical education.
As part of the celebrations, the IMA Kanchipuram donated bamboo saplings through the “Pasumai India” Trust. A tree plantation drive was subsequently conducted, reinforcing the importance of environmental sustainability and green initiatives.
The programme commenced with the Welcome Address by Dr. K. Boopathi, Dean, MMCHRI. NCC Cadets were honoured in recognition of their service and participation. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. V. Eswari, Vice Principal (Academics), MMCHRI, followed by the distribution of sweets.
Faculty members, medical and nursing students, and staff participated enthusiastically in the celebrations, reaffirming the spirit of patriotism, service, social responsibility, and commitment to a greener future.
