Meenakshi College of Nursing NSS Volunteers Conduct Kayakalp Cleanliness and Hygiene Drive at Somangalam PHC

NSS volunteers from Meenakshi College of Nursing participated in a Kayakalp cleanliness and hygiene drive at Somangalam Primary Health Centre (PHC) on 27 October 2026, in collaboration with the PHC administration. The initiative aimed to improve sanitation, strengthen infection prevention and control practices, promote proper biomedical waste management and enhance public awareness of hygiene.

As part of the drive, students cleaned the outdoor premises, removed plastic waste from the herbal garden and helped organise the waiting area. They also arranged colour-coded dustbins in patient-care areas and displayed informational charts to encourage proper waste segregation. In the outpatient department waiting area, volunteers demonstrated the WHO six-step handwashing technique and displayed posters on mosquito-borne disease prevention, sanitation and the prevention of healthcare-associated infections.

More than 30 patients and visitors participated in the health awareness sessions, gaining practical guidance on hygiene and responsible waste disposal in healthcare settings. The activity contributed to improving the cleanliness of the PHC while highlighting the role of nursing students in supporting community health, infection prevention and public health initiatives.
