The Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Meenakshi Ammal Dental College & Hospital, organized a Continuing Dental Education (CDE) program titled “Cementing the Basics and Beyond: GIC in Practice” on 5th July 2024. The program aimed to deepen clinical knowledge and sharpen practical skills related to modern applications of Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) in restorative and endodontic practice.
The guest speaker for the session was Dr. Ravi Shankar, who holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and a Master’s degree in Dental Materials Science from Queen Mary University of London. His keynote lecture explored evidence-based strategies for managing endodontic pain, merging contemporary research insights with clinical protocols for more effective patient outcomes.
A total of 63 participants, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members, and practicing clinicians, attended the event. The scientific sessions elaborated on the composition, handling characteristics, clinical indications, and recent developments in GIC materials. Participants also gained valuable perspectives on the use of GIC in minimally invasive dentistry, atraumatic restorative techniques, and modern adhesive systems.
Interactive discussions and Q&A sessions allowed attendees to engage with the resource person, clarify clinical queries, and exchange practical experiences. The program successfully enriched professional understanding and provided a platform for skill enhancement in the evolving field of restorative dentistry.
