The Department of Visual Communication, Meenakshi College of Arts and Science (MCAS) organized a commemorative programme to celebrate World Photography Day on 19th August 2026, highlighting the power of visual storytelling, creative expression, and artistic perspective. The event brought together faculty members, students, and aspiring photographers for an engaging academic and creative gathering.
Dr. P. Shanthi, Head, Department of Visual Communication, welcomed the dignitaries, guests, faculty members, and students and highlighted the significance of photography as a powerful medium of communication in contemporary media. Dr. P. Sagayaraj, Dean, MCAS, felicitated the gathering and emphasized the growing importance of visual communication in the digital era. He encouraged students to strengthen their observational, creative, and storytelling skills.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Naveenraj Gowthaman, renowned travel photographer, delivered an insightful guest lecture, sharing industry perspectives and practical guidance on composition, perspective, and emerging photographic technologies. With particular reference to travel photography involving tribal communities, he offered students valuable insights into responsible visual storytelling and the diverse possibilities within the field. His session encouraged students to look beyond photography as a hobby and explore it as a meaningful creative and professional pursuit.
As part of the celebration, winners of the photography competition were recognized for their creative submissions. The Chief Guest, along with the Dean and Principals Dr. V. Shanthi and Dr. Prabhavathy Devi, presented prizes and certificates to the winners.
The celebration provided students with an enriching platform to explore photography as a medium of artistic expression, communication, and professional opportunity while inspiring them to develop their creative perspectives and storytelling abilities.
