The Student Council of Meenakshi Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (MMCHRI) organized the International Day of Yoga 2026 celebration on 19th June 2026 under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” The programme aimed to promote awareness about the role of yoga in enhancing physical, mental, and emotional well-being across all stages of life.
The event commenced with Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by the Welcome Address delivered by Prof. Dr. V. Eswari, MD, Vice Principal (Academics), MMCHRI. In her address, she welcomed the gathering and highlighted the significance of incorporating yoga into daily life for achieving holistic health and wellness.
The Inaugural Address was delivered by Prof. Dr. K. V. Rajasekhar, Dean, MMCHRI, who emphasized the importance of yoga as a powerful tool for maintaining physical fitness, mental resilience, and overall well-being. He encouraged students and faculty members to embrace yoga as a lifelong practice for healthy living.
An enlightening session on “Common Yoga Protocol and Benefits of Yoga” was presented by Dr. V. Subbulakshmi, Principal, Meenakshi College of Yoga Science and Therapy (MCYST). The session highlighted the principles of the Common Yoga Protocol and explained how regular yoga practice contributes to healthy ageing, disease prevention, stress management, and improved quality of life.
The programme also featured an engaging Yogasanas Demonstration performed by students from MMCHRI, Arulmigu Meenakshi College of Nursing (AMCON), and Meenakshi College of Allied Health Sciences (MCAHS). The participants showcased various yoga postures and breathing techniques, demonstrating the practical application of yoga in promoting flexibility, balance, strength, and mental focus.
As part of the celebration, prizes were distributed to recognize the efforts and contributions of participants. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. S. Saravana Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Anatomy, MMCHRI, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, resource person, organizers, and participants for their valuable contributions to the success of the event.
The celebration successfully reinforced the importance of yoga as a holistic approach to health and wellness, inspiring participants to adopt healthy lifestyle practices and embrace yoga for lifelong physical and mental well-being.
