The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy (DVL), Meenakshi Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (MMCHRI) observed World Vitiligo Day 2026 on 25th June 2026 by organizing an awareness programme at the Outpatient Waiting Hall under the theme “From Stigma to Strength.” The programme aimed to create awareness about vitiligo, promote early diagnosis and treatment, and encourage social acceptance and emotional support for individuals living with the condition.
The programme was graced by Prof. Dr. K. V. Rajasekhar, Dean, MMCHRI, Prof. Dr. S. Kumaravel, Professor and Head, Department of DVL, and Dr. Rajesh, Professor, Department of DVL, who addressed the gathering on the importance of eliminating stigma associated with vitiligo and ensuring equitable access to diagnosis, treatment, and psychosocial support, irrespective of an individual’s background or socioeconomic status.
The awareness programme witnessed the participation of around 50 attendees, including faculty members, doctors from various departments, undergraduate students, patients with vitiligo, caregivers, and hospital staff. As part of the initiative, patient education pamphlets in Tamil were distributed to enhance public awareness and understanding of the condition.
To encourage student involvement, prizes were awarded to the winners of a poster competition conducted for Final Year MBBS students on the theme of vitiligo awareness. Faculty members of the Department of Dermatology also delivered informative sessions on the medical and surgical management of vitiligo, highlighting current treatment approaches and advances in patient care.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Nirmala, Assistant Professor, Department of DVL. The event successfully promoted awareness, compassion, and inclusivity while reinforcing the importance of early intervention and holistic care for individuals affected by vitiligo.
