Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy (MCOT), MAHER, organized a three-day workshop on “Qualitative Research Methods” from 5th to 7th March 2026 at the Auditorium, MAHER. The programme aimed to strengthen research competencies among students and faculty, with a focus on the application of qualitative methodologies in healthcare and academic research.
The event commenced with Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by the traditional lighting of the Kuthuvilakku, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge. The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Deepa Sundareswaran, who greeted the dignitaries, resource person, faculty, and participants. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Shyam Sivasamy, Director – IQAC, MAHER, who emphasized the critical role of research in advancing academic excellence and clinical practice. Dr. N. Arunagirinathan, Dean – Research, MAHER, delivered the special address, highlighting the importance of qualitative research in understanding human experiences and enhancing patient-centered care.
The workshop sessions were conducted by Prof. Dr. Richard Rose, Emeritus Professor of Inclusive Education, University of Northampton, United Kingdom, who served as the resource person. The sessions comprehensively covered key aspects of qualitative research, including research paradigms, ethical considerations, formulation of research questions, interview techniques, focus group discussions, observational methods, and data analysis. The sessions were highly interactive, enabling participants to gain both theoretical insights and practical exposure.
Participants actively engaged in discussions, group activities, and reflective exercises throughout the three-day programme, making the learning experience collaborative and enriching. The workshop concluded with a valedictory session, during which participants shared their feedback and reflections on the knowledge gained.
The programme was a significant academic initiative that enhanced research aptitude and provided a strong foundation for conducting qualitative research, reinforcing the importance of evidence-based and patient-centered approaches in healthcare.
