MCAS Observes World Alzheimer’s Day with Seminar on the Neuropsychological Perspective of Alzheimer’s Disease

The Department of Psychology, Meenakshi College of Arts and Science (MCAS), MAHER, organised a seminar titled “A Neuropsychological Perspective on Alzheimer’s Disease” on 23 September 2026 at the MAHER Auditorium in observance of World Alzheimer’s Day. The programme aimed to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and deepen participants’ understanding of its cognitive and psychological effects.

Dr. Srinivasan Jayaraman, Clinical Neuropsychologist, Registered Clinical Psychologist (India) and Chartered Psychologist (UK), served as the resource person. Dr. P. Sagayaraj, Dean, MCAS, welcomed the gathering, while Dr. N. Prabhavathy Devi, Principal, Shift II, honoured the resource person.

The session explored how Alzheimer’s disease affects memory, attention, thinking, language, behaviour and everyday functioning. The resource person highlighted the importance of early identification, neuropsychological assessment, appropriate care, family support and empathetic communication in preserving the dignity and quality of life of individuals living with the condition.

A total of 220 students, research scholars and staff members participated in the programme. Students of the Department of Psychology presented an educational skit and screened selected movie scenes illustrating the cognitive and behavioural changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. A painting competition also provided students with an opportunity to express their understanding of the theme, with winners and participants receiving recognition.

The seminar reinforced the message “Remember, Understand, Support,” emphasising awareness, compassion and inclusion for individuals experiencing cognitive decline and their families. The programme was coordinated by Dr. T. Mythili, Professor and Head, Department of Psychology, MCAS, with the support of the department’s faculty, students and the MCAS–MAHER Student Council.
