Meenakshi College of Occupational Therapy (MCOT) successfully organized an awareness programme under the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 3.0 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, drawing the active participation of nearly 120 students and faculty members. The initiative aimed to sensitize students to the harmful effects of tobacco use and to encourage the adoption of a healthy, tobacco-free lifestyle through education and engagement.
The programme began with an introductory address by Ms. Thenmozhi, MOT I Year student, who set the context and relevance of the national campaign. This was followed by a warm welcome address delivered by Mr. Evan Joel, MOT I Year student, who highlighted the objectives and significance of the awareness programme. The central session was led by the Principal, Prof. Deepa Sundareswaran, who delivered an insightful and impactful talk on the physical, psychological, and social consequences of tobacco consumption. She emphasized the importance of early prevention and underscored the critical role of young individuals in shaping a tobacco-free society through informed decisions and sustained awareness.
Adding a creative dimension to the programme, undergraduate students performed an engaging and thought-provoking skit that portrayed real-life situations associated with tobacco use and its adverse outcomes. The performance resonated strongly with the audience and effectively reinforced the campaign’s core messages. The awareness drive was further strengthened through poster presentations by BOT and MOT students, who creatively illustrated the ill effects of tobacco use along with practical strategies for cessation and prevention.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Sarath Velmuruga, MOT I Year student, marking the successful culmination of an informative and impactful awareness initiative. The event served as a meaningful platform to inspire collective responsibility and empower youth to make healthier choices for themselves and their communities.
