The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of Meenakshi Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (MMCHRI) organized a vibrant and thought-provoking college-level awareness programme on gender equality titled “EKTA – The Unity, The Future”, with the aim of fostering inclusivity, mutual respect, and gender sensitivity among students and faculty members.
The programme began with an inspiring inaugural address by Dr. K. V. Rajasekar, Dean, MMCHRI, who emphasized that gender equality is a fundamental pillar of professionalism and ethical practice in healthcare and education. He highlighted the responsibility of academic institutions in creating a safe, respectful, and equitable environment that nurtures dignity and equal opportunities for all. This was followed by a warm welcome address by Dr. A. Kala, who introduced the objectives of the programme and reaffirmed the commitment of MMCHRI toward gender justice and institutional well-being.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Indhu, Presiding Officer, ICC and Professor, who set an insightful tone for the session by addressing the concepts of gender equality, equity, and unity. She underscored the role of awareness, empathy, and collective responsibility in preventing discrimination and promoting harmony within academic and professional spaces.
A distinctive feature of the programme was the active involvement of undergraduate gender champions, who led a series of creative and impactful awareness activities. These included a socially relevant skit, a short film, an awareness speech, and an interactive session, all of which effectively communicated strong messages on equality, respect, and unity. The performances were engaging and encouraged reflection, dialogue, and meaningful discussion among participants.
The programme concluded with the collection of participant feedback, which reflected high levels of appreciation and awareness gained through the session, followed by a formal vote of thanks. Overall, “EKTA – The Unity, The Future” stood as a successful initiative by MMCHRI in reinforcing the values of gender equality and collective responsibility, while inspiring the academic community to work towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
