The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Meenakshi Ammal Dental College and Hospital, along with the Department of Public Health Dentistry, in collaboration with the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI), Chennai, participated in a “Beach Cleaning Programme” at Marina Beach on 15th February 2026. The initiative was undertaken with the objective of promoting environmental sustainability and strengthening community participation in coastal conservation efforts.
A total of 40 BDS students, one postgraduate student, and two faculty members actively engaged in the programme. Following an orientation by the EFI team, the participants carried out the beach cleaning activity in the areas designated by EFI members, under their direct supervision and guidance. The volunteers systematically collected plastic waste, bottles, wrappers, and other debris from the shoreline, ensuring proper segregation to facilitate responsible disposal.
The programme emphasized the ecological significance of maintaining clean coastal habitats. Participants were sensitized to the role of regular beach clean-up initiatives in creating a safer and more conducive environment for turtle nesting, thereby contributing meaningfully to marine biodiversity conservation. The activity reinforced the importance of civic responsibility and highlighted how sustained environmental action can lead to long-term ecological impact.
