The Departments of Mathematics and Psychology at MCAS, MAHER, jointly organized National Science Day on 03rd March 2026 at 11:00 a.m., commemorating the discovery of the Raman Effect by the renowned physicist C. V. Raman.
The programme commenced with Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by a welcome address delivered by Dr. P. Sayaragaj, Dean, who also felicitated the resource person in the presence of Dr. V. Shanthi, Principal (Shift–I), and Dr. N. Prabhavathi Devi, Principal (Shift–II).
The guest lecture was delivered by Dr. V. S. Chandrasekaran, Principal Scientist (Retired), Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, on the topic “Plastic and Public Health: Protecting Human Wealth for a Sustainable Future.” He elaborated on the detrimental impact of plastic on both human health and the environment, emphasizing the urgent need to reduce plastic usage through recycling and the adoption of traditional alternatives such as bronze, clay, and copper utensils.
He highlighted that India produced approximately 1.7 million metric tons of plastic in 2022 and pointed out that globally only about 9% of plastic waste is recycled, with the majority contributing to environmental pollution. He further explained the serious health risks associated with plastic production and microplastics, noting their presence in human tissues and their potential role in causing diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disorders, inflammation, and respiratory conditions, particularly among individuals exposed to plastic manufacturing and waste disposal environments.
As part of the celebration, a Science Exhibition was organized in which students actively participated, showcasing innovative projects and creative ideas. The best projects were recognized and awarded prizes, encouraging scientific curiosity and innovation among students.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks followed by the National Anthem. The event was successfully coordinated by Dr. T. Mythili, Professor, Department of Psychology, and Dr. R. Shanthi, Head, Department of Mathematics, making it a meaningful and impactful celebration of science and its relevance to society.
